Fit a planned mix inside a real slot
A DJ set has two clocks: the sum of the source tracks and the time the audience actually hears the continuous mix. Transitions cause those values to differ because outgoing and incoming tracks share an interval. This DJ set length calculator subtracts planned overlaps, adds any fixed introduction or closing block, and compares the result with a target performance slot.
The page models a running order from manual times. It does not access audio, identify beats, analyze waveforms, connect to a library, or decide where a transition should begin. The user supplies the full duration and overlap plan. That limitation keeps the calculator focused on capacity rather than pretending to make musical decisions.
Define the slot before filling it
Enter the contracted or intended slot as a duration, not a finish time. A sixty-minute slot means the measured program should fit within sixty minutes. If the event requires a clock finish, use the finish-time tool after the set duration is stable. Keeping slot capacity separate from clock projection makes revisions easier.
Add tracks in mix order. Each outgoing overlap belongs to the boundary after that track, except the final track, which has no following item. Optional intro and outro blocks represent fixed material outside the track rows, such as a spoken opening, ident, or planned closing cue. They are added after overlaps are removed.
Imagine six tracks with a combined source time of 33:40. Five planned overlaps of 40, 55, 35, 50, and 45 seconds remove 3:45. A 30-second intro and 45-second outro add 1:15, producing a planned set of 31:10. Against a 35-minute slot, the result shows 3:50 of margin.
Read margin as planning space
An “under” result is not automatically a problem. The remaining time may be intentional room for crowd response, a handoff, or track selection changes. An “over” result is not automatically solved by lengthening every overlap. Transition decisions affect the mix and must remain musically appropriate. The calculator identifies the numerical difference; the performer decides how to revise the program.
The comparison panel should show source music, total overlap, intro and outro time, effective set time, target slot, and signed margin. A copied summary can document the planned scenario, but it is not a live deck display or performance log. Resetting or leaving the page discards the rows.
Estimate honestly before detailed preparation
Early planning may use provisional durations. Mark them outside the tool or use optional labels that indicate an edit or version. As preparation improves, replace estimates with the exact performance versions. A radio edit, extended mix, live edit, or loop plan can differ substantially from another recording with a similar title; the calculator cannot identify the version.
For a rough capacity check, a source sum and average overlap may be enough. For a venue deadline, enter every transition individually and preserve a buffer. Manual mixing varies, a cue can be late, and a track may be cut earlier than planned. A seconds-level result should not be mistaken for a guarantee of seconds-level execution.
How this differs from a crossfade total
The crossfade calculator answers one general question: how much time remains after adjacent overlaps. This DJ route adds a performance target, explicit intro and outro blocks, and a margin decision. It is designed to answer “does this running order fit the slot?” rather than only “what is the overlapped duration?”
It is also distinct from the setlist tool. A live-band setlist emphasizes applause, tuning, show breaks, and an encore. This model treats neighboring music overlaps as the central timing adjustment. Use the route whose categories match the production instead of forcing every event into one form.
Validate transition values
An overlap must be shorter than both adjacent tracks. A final-track overlap is invalid because there is no next track in the entered order. A missing value in a detailed plan is not silently interpreted as zero; enter zero when the intention is a clean boundary. These checks make the summary auditable.
If the set appears impossibly short, review units and duplicated overlaps. If it is too long, confirm that full track durations were used and that the correct edits are represented. Do not subtract a separate crossfade total from a set that already contains shortened performance times. Each shared interval should be removed once.
The target slot must be positive, and the tool rejects malformed hours, minutes, and seconds. Valid rows should remain available after an error so one field can be corrected without rebuilding the order.
Operational limits
The calculation does not account for equipment failure, venue handoffs, announcements not represented in a fixed block, audience response, or a late start. It does not recommend safe sound levels, provide licensing advice, or authorize use of recordings. Those responsibilities remain with the performer and organizer.
Use the margin as a design aid. For a hard curfew, keep contingency outside the planned set. For a flexible stream or rehearsal, compare alternate running orders. Copy each result with clear labels so an earlier scenario is not mistaken for the current plan.
