A crossfade changes playlist runtime because two tracks play at the same time during a transition. Adding every full duration therefore overstates the experienced sequence whenever overlaps are planned. Custom mode is better for a deliberate mix, a theatrical sequence, or any queue where transitions vary. Each overlap belongs between the track on its left and the track on its right.

An overlap must be shorter than both neighboring tracks. A value equal to or longer than a track would imply that the shorter item never has a non-overlapped moment and may signal a misplaced unit or an unsuitable model. The interface rejects that value rather than silently clamping it. It also rejects a missing transition in custom mode, because an empty field could mean either zero overlap or unfinished input. Enter zero explicitly when two tracks meet without a crossfade.

What the calculation assumes

The basic formula is source runtime minus total adjacent overlap. It assumes crossfades do not themselves change track speed, that overlaps occur exactly once, and that no separate gaps or pauses occur. If a sequence contains both silence and overlap, calculate the transition types separately or use the general tool with a carefully documented plan. Adding a gap and subtracting a crossfade for the same boundary would be contradictory unless the production genuinely contains both at different moments.

Different playback systems may implement crossfade settings differently. A displayed setting might describe a maximum, a curve, or behavior affected by short tracks and protected content. Small overlaps add up in long playlists. Forty tracks create thirty-nine transitions. At six seconds each, the planned reduction is 234 seconds, or 3:54. That can matter when a set must fit a venue window or when a timed program needs a buffer. It is still unwise to fill every available second. Human cues, loading delays, announcements, and manual mixing variation can consume the theoretical saving.

For a DJ performance, custom transition lengths often communicate more than one global setting. For casual listening, a uniform estimate may be sufficient. For an album intended to play gaplessly, confirm whether the supplied track durations already represent boundaries as authored; the calculator cannot infer mastering behavior.

Diagnose surprising results

If the effective runtime is much shorter than expected, check for a value entered in minutes but treated as seconds or for a decimal copied into an integer field. Review the transition count. Ensure that track durations describe complete source items and do not already have overlap removed. If custom values shifted after deleting a row, confirm each boundary again before calculating.

The result is temporary. Copy the transition summary before reset if it will become part of production notes. Optional track names can make that summary easier to review, but durations alone are sufficient and reduce the amount of descriptive information held on the screen.
